I recently decided I wanted to know how to make natural air fresher for the home.
Mainly because my interest in becoming more environmentally friendly is increasing I’ve been looking at different changes you can make in your life and in your home.
I love to be creative and use my hands and if I can find a way to make something I’ll give it a go!
I can literally spend hours online looking at different crafts and projects I can have a go at myself. I then became interested in making my own cleaning products. I love the fact you can make something that is safer for the environment, natural and very cheap!
What’s not to love?
So it’s bank holiday weekend. The weather’s rubbish, I’m feeling a bit rubbish myself and normally when I feel this way being creative is a way to escape.
I decided to have a go at making something natural for the home.
I like the idea of making my own air freshener as I normally hate all the fake, overpowering smells you get from shop bought freshener. You normally can’t even breath after spraying some of them!
We’ve just got a kitten and with a kitten comes a litter tray so we’re in need of something to spray every now and again!
The beauty of a natural product is that chances are you have a lot of the supplies lying around the house or even in the garden!
When I started to look at making my own natural air freshener I purchased a glass spray bottle from Amazon and a label maker, just because I like the way it looks but any spray bottle will do and even better if it’s recycled!
So here’s the recipe I tried when I made my own natural air freshener. Hope you enjoy!
This was super easy, quick and gives a more natural smell to your home.
What Ingredients Do You Need To Make A Natural Air Freshener?
For this air freshener you’ll need:
- A few sprigs of rosemary
- A few sprigs of sage
- 2 teaspoons of dried lavender
- 2 lemon slices
- 4 drops of lavender essential oil
- 4 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 500ml water
- 500ml spray bottle (This is the type I used)
Here’s How To Make Natural Air Freshener In 4 Steps.
Place all the ingredients into a pan and put on the hob to simmer for 5 minutes. Be careful not to boil as the first time I did this it made the water go brown and the ingredients were ruined. (Not a good look!)
After 5 minutes, take it from the hob and leave it to cool for a minute or so.
When cooled, pour the ingredients into your spray bottle. It’s up to you if you want to put the sprigs and lemon into the bottle also. Although it enhances the smell having them in the bottle.
I couldn’t fit the lemon slices in so I just squeezed the remaining juice into the bottle.
Step 4 (Optional):
If you want to make it look pretty you can add a homemade label as you can see here.
This is the label maker I used. That one or anything similar will work.
How Long Does Homemade Air Freshener Last For?
The mixture will last up to a year, however, if the fresh stuff goes a bit moldy take them out and add some fresh ones to bring the smell back into it.
I am sure you’ll use it within a year anyway.

Can You Use Different Essential Oils For Your Homemade Natural Air Freshener?
I haven’t personally tried anything yet but I did a little research into different combinations.
For example, you could try these, all you need to do is mix them together without cooking them:
- Lavender and Chamomile- 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons of vodka, 10 drops lavender essential oil and 5 drops of chamomile essential oil
- Grapefruit, tangerine and lime- 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of vodka, 3 drops each of grapefruit, tangerine, and lime essential oil
