We are all becoming more aware that we need to take better care of our planet. I’ve realized that it’s actually something I’m becoming quite passionate about.
It’s very easy to sit there and think ‘well I’m just 1 person what difference is that going to make?’
Imagine if everyone thought like that?
You could start by just making a few small changes, even something as small as using your own shopping bags when you do the weekly shop. (It also saves some pennies by not buying new bags every time)
I’m going to tell you 15 ways you could change your lifestyle just to make that difference to the world.
You may be ‘just 1 person’ but you can live a guilt-free life knowing you’re making the world better!
1. Eat less meat and dairy
It may be a tough one for some but there are a million delicious vegan recipes out there!
Going plant based is the biggest way to reduce environmental impact on the planet.
Did you know it takes 2500 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of beef?
Fewer cars on the road means less carbon, other gases and pollution going into the air, plus you save money on petrol!
Why not get fit in the process by walking or riding to work?
3. Ditch the plastic
There is a range of glass bottles and storage containers out there. You can even ditch your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one!
Don’t use plastic straws, try some stainless steel ones!
Another small thing you can change is when doing the weekly shop, buy fruits and vegetables without the packaging.
4. Go paperless
Get all your bills sent electronically.
You could ditch wrapping paper and use a recycled cloth bag or a scarf to wrap your presents.
Why not try using an e-reader rather than buying books?
5. Hang out to dry
Obviously depending on the weather but when possible use your washing line or drying rack rather than tumble dry.
6. Cook fresh
Not only is it nicer to cook from scratch it also reduces the amount of plastic you use.
Prepare as many meals in advance to save you time and stop you ‘slipping up’ and grabbing a microwave meal!
7. Use your food waste bin
Most food ends up in landfill sites where it rots and releases methane – a damaging greenhouse gas.
If you use the food bin for food that isn’t eaten it can be recycled into a good quality soil improver or fertilizer. If you’re feeling extra eco friendly why not try home composting?
8. Don’t use plastic cutlery
Plastic cutlery is rubbish anyway! You’re trying to cut your food with your plastic knife and fork and its bending all over the place. Why not try wooden ones? They’re sturdier and more stylish.
Recycling is so easy! It’s not just your everyday household items though.
You can also recycle things like batteries, keys, running shoes, and even crayons.
10. Use eco friendly cleaning products
Green cleaning products use more natural methods of cleaning which are less harmful.
You could even have a go at making your own!
11. Get rid of cling film
Invest in a beeswax wrap. Much more fun than plastic cellophane. Why not pack your lunch in a cute unicorn print beeswax wrap?
It’ll be much cooler than your friends!
12. Buy eco friendly gifts
Get your friends and family involved and buy some eco friendly gifts such as a reusable coffee cup or a new glass water bottle.
Another example is online gifts such as e-books or music downloads.
13. Plant a tree
Give something back to the earth and get the kids involved! Trees clean the air and provide oxygen. You can educate the children and they will love watching it grow.
14. Grow your own food
From growing your own fruits and vegetables to growing a little herb garden!
By growing your own food you stop dangerous amounts of carbon emissions and waste from airplanes and other forms of transport into the atmosphere.
15. Take a trip to the beach
We all know littering is bad.
I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of our oceans and the true horror of all the rubbish that is harming our environment and the sea life.
You could take a lovely trip to the beach and pick up some litter before it makes it’s way to the sea.
One of the worst forms of litter is cigarette butts, so make sure you include them in your collection!
