We’re living in a time where there’s a lot of anxiety and stress in our lives.
People are working harder, looking after busy families and just turning the news on is enough to make you depressed!
It’s so easy to take care of everyone else and not yourself which is so important!
If you don’t take time for yourself, how can you be at your best for your family?
I’ve been researching different ideas to help you (and myself) relax.
I find I don’t take enough time out sometimes I can feel like I’m ‘treading water’ and when in a negative mood nothing is going right!
You have to work at being a calmer positive person but when you are aware and making a more conscious effort life starts to get better!
Ready? Let’s go.
11 Ways To De-Stress And Feel More Positive.
1. Eat Well
When you eat junk food and lots of sugary foods it feels good at the time but after you just feel gross.
I often find that I’m eating just because I feel stressed out and I’m not even paying attention to what or how much I’m eating, the end result is me feeling worse and guilty!
It’s so easy when you’re busy to grab something quickly.
However when you eat better and cleaner you feel so much better, your mind feels clearer and you have more energy.
The best way to do this when you’re busy is to plan and prepare as much as you can.
Healthy meals can be quick too!
Try some new recipes if you’re sick of making the same old stuff and enjoy feeling and looking great!
I know it sounds like a cliche but exercise is good for you. Join a gym or go for a FREE walk around the block.
Pop in your headphones and play a positive podcast to make you feel better, forget your busy life for half an hour.
Exercise produces endorphins that act as natural painkillers, this improves quality of sleep which can reduce stress!
3. Take A Trip To The Beach
Nothing makes me happier than going to the beach and collecting shells and other treasures from the sea.
Whether you’re going for a walk with the family or spending a day there.
It just makes you feel instantly happy when you’re sitting running your fingers in the sand, going for a walk barefoot and having a paddle in the sea. I feel happier just thinking about it!
4. Relax And Be Yourself
This may seem like a silly one but sometimes it’s hard to completely relax and be yourself. You know what it’s like when you’re around certain company that you’re not 100% comfortable with?
It can’t make you relaxed, you feel all tense and can’t be the true you.
When you can, go home and be with your family, take your make up off and slob out in your pj’s.
Sometimes it’s so nice to be sitting under a blanket at home in front of the tv!
5. Get A Hobby
So I’m using myself as an example here but when I’m feeling particularly moody or agitated I like to relax by being creative to take my mind off things.
You can switch off and concentrate on what you’re doing. There are so many things you can ‘take up’ and it can be fun trying something new!
A few examples can be:
- DIY project/ upcycling
- Painting/ Craft projects
- Playing football
and the list goes on.
It’s simply about finding the time to focus on other things!
Although it might seem like a hassle, preparing for your day the night before can make your mornings less stressful and sets you up for a good day!
Get the uniforms ironed, the packed lunches made and bags by the door ready to go and you’ll be off to a winning start.
It may take some time out of your evening but I’d rather that than rushing around in the morning.
7. Learn To Say ‘No’
As I get older there’s nothing better than canceled plans.
I love to go out with my friends and family but it doesn’t mean I need to go out to every birthday and girls night out!
If you want to sit in your pj’s all snuggled up then do it!
When I say yes to something I don’t want to do I feel annoyed, anxious and irritable thinking about it.
That’s not a good feeling for anyone so by just saying no you’re creating more calm in your life.
Don’t feel guilty for saying no to something either, it doesn’t make you a bad person!
8. Have Some ‘Me’ Time
It’s so easy to take care of everyone else and not yourself.
It’s important to find some time to have by yourself and not end up doing the housework!
Take a bath, have a nap, read a book, sit in the garden and appreciate your surroundings.
The list goes on!
You’re an individual too and you won’t be much help or be there for your loved ones if you’re tired and miserable.
9. Social Media
You can’t really avoid social media these days, everyone has it. If it’s not social media then its the news popping up on your phone and is it ever anything positive?
I sometimes find myself endlessly scrolling through my phone and actually feeling annoyed or angry or even jealous of what I’m seeing.
I wonder why I’m looking at other peoples lives and comparing them to my own when in reality nothing on there is a true representation of real life.
That can’t be good for anyone’s mind!
If I’m having a really rubbish day I delete the app off my phone for a while and trust me it does make you feel better. Plus you spend more quality time with the family without being glued to your phone.
So this is something that’s still quite new to me and I’m defiantly not an expert on it.
However the times I have tried it I have managed to switch off and just think about trying to get into position.
I have been to classes but there are also lots of videos on youtube to follow (if you’d rather be at home.)
Just make sure you’re in a calming space to ensure you’re present and not worrying about work later!
11. Write In A Diary
I find this definitely helps me when I’m just in that mood when I don’t really know why I’m agitated or just feeling really anxious.
I’ll find somewhere quiet and comfy and just write whatever is on my mind. Most of the time it’s rubbish but you don’t always have people around to offload onto (or you might not even want to talk to anyone!)

It’s not good to keep things bottled up so just writing down all the stuff going on in your head can really make a difference.
I hope at least 1 of these helps someone be able to take 5 minutes and chill out. We’re all stressed and lead busy lives and it can be easy to forget who you are at times so remember to spare some time in your day for YOU!
